Day 5 Gilgandra to Parkes

Great camp spot beside the pub - Royal Hotel in Gilgandra
Only one other person there

Sun shining for our departure

The grand Royal Hotel

Before leaving Gilgandra we drove down to the Castlereagh  river to check it out

Pretty wildflowers on the banks

Water flowing fast

Planter pots down by the river for beautification

Just spotted this as we were leaving the riverfront.
Looks like there is a project to build a pedestrian throughway from the Main Street

Gilgandra Main Street

More beautification of the town

Our destination - Dubbo for a GVM upgrade check

Over the river…

On to Newell Highway

Beautiful drive - sun shining, yellow flowers along the road side and good road

Talbragar River

Hannaford Tyre and Suspension premises in Dubbo

This is where we had to take the car for its 1500 km GVM upgrade check. We had to unhitch the van in the car park so that they could do the check on the car.
We waited inside in comfy chairs whilst they did the check and Bill went over to get coffees. We enjoyed more of Jill’s banana and walnut bread to have with the coffee

On the road again

Over the Macquarie river

On the Mitchell Highway towards Narromine

Good road

More pretty flowers beside the road

On the way into Narromine

Then onto Parkes via Tullamore
At least - that was our plan

Going to Tullamore via The McGrane Way

We came across this sign but believed it to be old as a lot of the water over roads had been receding. We checked the NSW flood warning map and it didn’t indicate that this was a problem, so we continued on

There was lots of water around

More Canola fields

Water over the road
but only very shallow depth

No problem going through

More water but again - very shallow

Good road where not flooded

Discovered the water splashing at the side created this pretty rainbow

Some of the water over the road was muddy, evidence that it was subsiding

Lots of water beside the road

More water

Nice sunny day and fortunately no rain on the way

Came to an area where there had obviously been road maintenance

We then came to a section where there appeared to be more water over the road than previously so Bill got out and walked through it to check it out

It got deeper

And deeper

So it was at this point we realised we needed to turn around and go back !!!!
This was as far as we had travelled along this route. It meant we had to go all the way back to Dubbo as we were certainly not going to trust any other back roads

So Bill checked out the shoulder of the road and found that it was substantial enough to put the van on to turn

So thank goodness Bill was able to reverse the van on to the shoulder and turn round

A big relief

Back on the road to Narramine

Then back to Dubbo

Had to pull off onto the side of the road for this….

Did a Wikicamps check whilst on the way back to Dubbo to see where we could camp the night. Rang these guys and found that it was a goer. Didn’t want to just turn up in case the site was a quagmire

So back through Dubbo

and on to Parkes

Continuing on the safe Newell  Highway

Workmen on the road fixing patches

Took this photo to send to Quentin my Physio

This is the turn off where we would have come out had we been able to continue further on the other road

Another turn off where we may have been able to come out in from the other road

A cute church that we passed when driving through Peak Hill

Just as well we didn’t plan to go here!!!!

More bright yellow Canola fields

Busy road with trucks overtaking trucks!!!!

Finally we reached Parkes

Drove through Parkes to reach our night's camp spot

Beautiful trees lining the Main Street

Out on to the Newell Highway again the other side of town

and before long we were at the entrance gate where we camped the night

Great spot

Enjoyed the sunset after setting up

Cooked up a healthy steak and veg meal tonight seeing as we hadn’t stopped for anything to eat on the way

Enjoyed the meal with a good drop of red 🍷

This HEMA map of our journey today, showing the section where we turned back
