Day 41 Exploring around Streaky Bay

This was our allocated camp spot for the night although I took this photo the following morning.
We had arrived so late that we were cooking up our Moroccan lamb dinner in the amazing camp kitchen almost next door to us quite late and by the time we went to have showers they had turned all the lights out in the park

Our plan for the day was to go on the two advertised scenic drive loops so we set off driving back into Streaky Bay from the caravan park which was situated outside of town

To get to the loop drives we drove through town

Past the jetty

And along the foreshore

And out into the fields

We decided to go on the Cape Bauer Loop first

Few dead trees along the way

Gravel road excellent

One of our many stops to rescue a wandering skink

Our first stop Hally’s beach

Steps down to the beach - Bill counted them I didn’t!!!
They were in fact more than were visible because the bottom rungs were completely covered in sand

Another deserted beach with us the only ones on it

Stood on a rock watching the waves then suddenly one came further over the rocks so we had to hurry backwards to avoid getting wet!!!

Back out on the small track from Hally’s beach

To the main scenic drive road and on to the turn off to the whistling rocks and blow holes

Boardwalk and steps

To a few lookouts

We first of all went to look at the whistling rocks but they weren’t actually whistling

We then stood at the lookout for the blowholes and were rewarded with the sound however not posting video here so can’t hear the sound

As you can see by the cars in the car park there were quite a few people here

Continuing on the road we came across another skink to rescue from the road

Out towards another point of interest on a side track

It was way past lunchtime and we were looking for somewhere under shelter with seats to have our salad rolls that I have made up using the wholemeal buns that we had purchased from the bakery at Colton

Sadly there were no shelters in sight so we parked in such a way that we could sit on the tailgate and enjoy the view

Also sadly there were masses of flies as you can see on Bill‘s hat so we did not linger there

Back out on the track back into streaky Bay

To connect with the Westall loop scenic drive

Another of these are very relevant signs

We decided not to go out to Yanerbie or to speed point but to continue on the Westall loop

First of all we came to the dunes

Where of course we had to stop and climb up them

We spent quite some time here having a lot of fun

Bill made it to the top of the first dune easily
I had a bit of difficulty on this steeper slope although it does not look steep in this photo

But was rewarded with views down to the car

And back down the other way where you can see that Bill has climbed down to

We stood and watched the wind blowing the sand off the top of the dune

Moving back on to the excellent gravel road

Driving past this heathland

Where we came across some water
This pool was quite deep

Spent a bit of time exploring this area

This WikiCamps map shows where we were

This was our next turn off on the route

Turning to the smooth pool

And clambering over the rocks to find the pool

Very pretty area so we spent quite awhile here fossicking in amongst the rocks

Great views as we drove out

To the next point of interest

Maintenance on the road

Next point of interest the granites

Stunning view from the top

More steps to go down

Fabulous area down below to explore

Limpets

Bill walked as far as he could over the rocks towards ocean

There was one lone surfer out there enjoying the waves but not catching any

Driving back into town had to stop and take photos at this property gate of these quirky things

More beautiful coastal scenery

Our last stop on our scenic Drive was the very impressive Tractor beach campground established by the Streaky Bay council
Unfortunately I didn’t take photos of the campground or the toilet block but it was really well set out

End of the loop and time to head back to town

We had decided to have dinner out so we went to the streaky Bay hotel and caught up with Peter there and had dinner with him
Just had to take photos of this bar staff ladies shirt because it completely explained the issue that Bill had with the size of his beer when he asked for a schooner and felt shortchanged

Missed the sunset but then saw this beautiful sky on our way driving back to the caravan park

This HEMA map image shows the two scenic drives that we went on
